What Is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy in which very fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed at specific points on the body. Your acupuncturist chooses the points based on your symptoms and goals to encourage circulation, relax tight muscles, and support the body’s own healing response. Many clients use acupuncture for neck, back, and joint pain, headaches, stress, and better sleep, often alongside the care they already receive.

Consultation and Preparation

Your first visit starts with a 15-minute consultation. Benjamin will ask about your health history, current symptoms, medications, and goals, then explain how acupuncture and any add-on therapies could fit into your plan. To prepare, eat a light meal a few hours beforehand, stay hydrated, and wear loose, comfortable clothing so the treatment areas are easy to reach.

What Happens During Acupuncture

Intake and Assessment

Benjamin reviews how you have been feeling since your last visit and checks the areas of concern. Using the principles of Balance Method Acupuncture, he selects the points for your session, which may be on your arms, legs, back, or other areas away from the source of pain.

Needle Placement

Thin, sterile, single-use needles are gently placed at the selected points. Most people feel only a light tap, followed by a dull ache, warmth, or heaviness, which are normal signs the point is active. The needles are far thinner than the ones used for injections.

Rest and Relaxation

With the needles in place, you rest comfortably for about 20 to 30 minutes. Many clients feel deeply relaxed and some fall asleep. If you added fire cupping, gua sha, or red light heat therapy, it is included during this 60-minute visit.

Your Treatment Plan

The needles are removed quickly and painlessly at the end of the session. Benjamin will share what to expect over the next day and recommend how often to come back, since most concerns respond best to a series of visits rather than a single treatment.

Balance and Relief Start Today

After Your Acupuncture Session

Right After Your Visit

Most people return to their day right away. Drink plenty of water, eat a light meal, and give yourself an easy evening if you can. It is best to skip intense workouts, alcohol, and very hot showers for the rest of the day.

Normal Reactions

Some people feel tired, relaxed, or slightly sore at the needle sites, and a small bruise can occasionally appear. After fire cupping, round pink or purple marks are common and fade within about a week. Gua sha can leave light redness that fades within a few days.

Getting the Most From Treatment

Keep a simple note of your pain, sleep, and stress levels between visits so you and Benjamin can track progress. Staying consistent with the visit schedule he recommends usually brings the best results, especially for long-standing concerns.

When to Contact Us

If you notice anything unexpected or a reaction that does not settle within a day or two, call BL Medspa at (602) 675-1776. Our team is happy to answer your questions and adjust your next session if needed.

When to Expect Results

Some clients feel lighter, calmer, or notice less pain after their very first session. For ongoing pain or stress, most people see steady improvement over four to six weekly visits, after which sessions can often be spaced further apart. Your timeline depends on how long you have had the concern and your overall health.

Acupuncture is a gentle, low-risk way to support your body’s natural balance. Clients come to us for relief from pain and muscle tension, better sleep, a calmer mood, and more energy. Tui Na, a hands-on Chinese therapeutic massage, can be booked on its own for tight, sore muscles, while fire cupping and gua sha help release tension and boost circulation. Acupuncture FAQs

Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel very little. Acupuncture needles are much thinner than injection needles, and you may notice a light tap, a dull ache, or warmth at the point. Benjamin checks in with you throughout the session to keep you comfortable.
Acupuncture and Tui Na sessions are 60 minutes. Standalone fire cupping and gua sha sessions are 30 minutes. New clients also have a short 15-minute initial consultation.
It depends on your goals. Some people feel relief after one visit, while long-standing pain or stress usually responds best to a series of four to six weekly sessions. Benjamin will recommend a plan after your consultation.
Tui Na is a hands-on Chinese therapeutic massage that uses pressing, kneading, and acupressure. Fire cupping uses warmed glass cups to create gentle suction that lifts tight tissue. Gua sha uses a smooth tool glided over oiled skin to ease tension and improve circulation.
Acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed acupuncturist using sterile, single-use needles. Mild soreness, tiredness, or a small bruise can happen. Cupping and gua sha can leave temporary marks that fade within days to about a week.
