What Are the Different Types of Nail Shapes?

When going for a manicure or pedicure, you must decide what nail shape you want. Most times, you either choose between round or square. But these days, the array of options has expanded. Different nail shapes help keep things fun and act as a form of expression.

Oval Nails

You can make your fingers look longer by getting oval nails. They will get filed down on the sides together with the tips. The shape also gives the illusion that you have long nails and looks great with nail art.

Square Nails

You can get square-shaped nails by having them flattened at the top with sharp corners and straight sides. These types of nails are low maintenance and stylish. They can look great with bold colors.

Squoval Nails

You can get squoval nails if you do not want sharp corners but still love to have a flat edge like a square. The shape suits everyone but looks more appealing to people with long and wide nail beds.

Round Nails

Most people who prefer short nails go for round-shaped nails. You can create the illusion of longer fingers by getting this shape. Round nails start with straight sides like square nails. They then follow the natural shape of your fingertip by curving at the edges.

Almond Nails

People who desire a glamorous nail shape can get almond nails. These types of nails get shaped along the sides like oval-shaped nails. The nail technician will tamper with the nail wall to create a round peak to mimic the shape of an almond. Natural nails often do not hold this shape. Acrylic or gel is best suited for almond manicures.

Stiletto Nails

Most people who love dramatic nails go for the striking shape of a stiletto nail. It looks like an elongated almond nail with a pointier and drastic tip. Stiletto nails may not be ideal for natural nails as you may not manage to maintain them. They work best with acrylics and nail enhancements.

Ballerina Nails

Ballerina nails are a favorite for most people. They are also called coffin-shaped nails, as they resemble a ballerina slipper or a coffin shape. They are like a stiletto nail with a square tip instead of a sharp tip.

Flare Nails

Flare-shaped nails are also called the duckbill shape. They flare out and upwards. They attract so much attention, and the best way to enjoy them is to play around with colors., bling, and fun prints. However, they may not be ideal for people who work a lot using their hands.

Lipstick Nails

The fresh tube of lipstick has a cut angle that lipstick nails mimic. These nails slant at the tip diagonally to make a unique nail shape. They can make you stand out and look best at any length.

Arrowhead Nails

People who first want to try out pointy nails and are not willing to commit to getting stiletto nails can start with arrowhead nails. These nail shapes have a shorter point with dramatic angles that create a tip.

Edge Nails

The point of the nails has an angled tip that is slightly sharper than the peak of a mountain. However, it is not as aggressive as an arrowhead nail or long as that of a stiletto nail.

Edge nails have their top part shaped to resemble an edge after the sides get filled to extend straight. If you are considering trying out this shape, you must first be comfortable with how sharp the nail will be.
